The Elections Commission (EC) has decided to hold by-elections on January 13 for Male' mayor and three vacant city council seats.
Appearing on PSM's "Raajje Miadhu" program, EC Vice President Ismail Habeeb said the commission made the decision last week and that applications would be opened today for the submission of candidacy papers.
Aside from by-elections for the Male' City Council, Habeeb said by-elections will also be held on the same day to fill a vacant seat in the Vaavu Rakeedhoo council and elect members to Women's Development Committees on 18 islands.
Habeeb said candidates will be able to submit applications from November 28 to December 13. After the elections take place on January 13, official results will be announced on January 15, he said.
Former Male' Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu resigned to take the oath of office as the new President. Three Male' City councilors also resigned to take up posts in Muizzu's administration, including Abdulla Naseer and Adam Rameez.
