Alifushi MP Mohamed Rasheed Hussain (Bigey) was elected parliamentary group leader of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on Wednesday.
Mohamed Rasheed won 28 votes during a meeting held to elect a new parliamentary group leader.
His closest contender, Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir, trailed with 20 votes. Kurendhoo MP Abdul Gani Abdul Hakeem came third with four votes.
The post of the MDP's parliamentary group leader was vacant after the former leader, Addu Hithadhoo Uthuru MP Mohamed Aslam, was elected as Speaker of Parliament.
The term of the parliamentary group leader is two years and six months, according to the MDP's governing statutes.
Aslam was elected as parliamentary group leader on February 18, 2022 and played a leading role in managing the parliamentary group.
Aslam was also the running mate of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the MDP's presidential candidate.
