The Housing Ministry has stopped awarding flats under 'Gedhoruveriya' scheme as ordered by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
As the ACC has ordered the awarding flats to be suspended for now, the process has been halted until further instruction from the commission, the Housing Ministry said in a statement on Thursday afternoon.
On Wednesday, the Housing Ministry gazetted the final list of recipients for the first 4,000 flats to be awarded under the scheme, after which a lottery draw commenced with ministry officials drawing lots.
While the draw was ongoing, the ACC told the ministry to stop signing agreements and to suspend all processes related to the awarding of flats.
However, the Housing Ministry went ahead with signing agreements for the flats by sending documents online to some recipients.
The government has been building 32 towers with 18 floors each in Hulhumale' phase two for the housing scheme.
The towers include 1,200 two-bedroom units and 2,800 three-bedroom units. Work is now nearing completion on the apartments.
The monthly rent for the three-bedroom flats is MVR 8,000, inclusive of an MVR 1,000 maintenance fee. Rent for the two-bedroom flats is MVR 6,000 with an MVR 1,000 maintenance fee.
Residents would have to start paying rent three months after the flats are handed over. The rent would be collected for 300 months.
