More than 45 MDP MPs sign impeachment motion against Nasheed

More than 45 members of the MDP parliamentary group have signed the impeachment motion against Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.

The MDP parliamentary group unanimously approved the motion against Nasheed during a meeting held on Sunday.

The MDP withdrew its initial motion to remove Nasheed from the post after its defeat in the first round of the presidential election.

The motion was submitted to the parliament weeks before the election but was delayed after Nasheed refused to put it on the agenda.

Hulhumale' MP Ali Niyaz told Adhadhu that there is no excuse not to proceed with the motion this time.

Earlier, Nasheed claimed that the motion could not proceed as MDP had submitted to impeach the Speaker and his deputy Eva Abdulla at the same time. Sessions were suspended after both Nasheed and Eva recused themselves from the chair.

Nasheed also delayed the motion over the reconstitution of the committees following some MDP MPs' switch to his Democrats party.

Ali Niyaz said both excuses have now been resolved.

"This time we are moving the impeachment of the Speaker of Parliament. So the deputy can preside over the sessions... The committees have been formed too" he said.

He said there was no excuse to delay no-confidence motion but Nasheed might try to delay it by not holding sessions.
