Nasheed to return to MDP if 50 percent members of national council request

Parliament Speaker and former President Mohamed Nasheed has informed the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail that he is ready to return to the party.

A credible source confirmed to Adhadhu that Nasheed is willing to return to MDP if 50 percent of the party's national council members make the request.

Nasheed, who is the former President of MDP, left the party following disagreements that grew within the party leadership.

He contested against President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the MDP primary in January and was defeated.

He later formed the Fikurehge Dhirun faction in MDP which registered as a separate political party named the Democrats.

Nasheed is currently a member of the Democrats and backed the party's candidate in the presidential election.

The party got seven percent of the votes in the first round of the election. MDP tried to get Nasheed's support for the second round, but the party decided not to back either candidate.
