Flooding caused by heavy rainfall in the central atolls damaged 75 percent of homes in Lhaviyani Kurendhoo, the island council has estimated.
Kurendhoo Council Vice President Ibrahim Mufeed told Adhadhu that floodwaters seeped into 70 to 75 percent of homes and damaged furniture and household items. Work is ongoing to assess the extent of the damage, after which an exact number of affected homes could be provided, he added.
The rainwater has been pumped out of all homes now but some roads remain inundated, Mufeed said.
As a result of flooding, furniture and electronic items such as refrigerators were damaged beyond use in some homes, he said. But the council has not received reports of any homes that required evacuation, Mufeed noted.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said it was working with soldiers to pump out the floodwaters. Assessment of damages is underway with the island council, it added.
The Met Office has meanwhile issued a white alert warning of heavy downpours in the northern and central atolls.
