The Prosecutor General’s (PG) office pressed three new charges against former Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) managing director Abdulla Ziyath, a key player in the biggest corruption scandal in the country.
The PG office said in a statement on Thursday that the charges were filed in court earlier in the week. The cases involved the embezzlement of MVR 203 million, USD 6 million and USD 1 million
The prosecution sought a combined jail sentence of 12 years for the charges.
Ziyath was managing director when more than MVR 1.3 billion was siphoned off from the MMPRC. The chief architect of the embezzlement scheme, former Vice President Ahmed, was tourism minister at the time.
Ziyath is serving a 20-year sentence handed with a guilty verdict in an MMPRC corruption case. However, he is currently under house arrest.
Adeeb was also convicted over the MMPRC graft but he is currently on medical leave in Singapore. Ziyath and Adeeb are two important prosecution witnesses in the cases against former President Abdulla Yameen.
