President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Wednesday accepted the Letter of Credence from the first Resident Ambassador of the US to the Republic of Maldives Hugo Hue-Ho Yon.
According to the President's Office, this marks a significant milestone in the diplomatic ties between the two nations and underscores their dedication to enhancing cooperation.
Yon paid a brief introductory call to Solih, who extended his congratulations on the commencement of the Ambassador's term. Solih emphasized that Yon's appointment and the establishment of a US embassy signify an expansion of the partnership between the Maldives and the US.
He noted that the reopening of the Maldives Embassy in Washington was a momentous occasion for the Maldives, symbolizing a pivotal advancement in foreign policy.
He further stated that the embassy will open doors to strengthening relations across various avenues, including people-to-people contact, economic and trade partnerships, and cultural exchanges.
During the meeting, Yon expressed his eagerness to build upon the fruitful bilateral relations between the United States and the Maldives. He also commended the Maldives' efforts in addressing climate change impacts and building resilience.
Yon expressed his gratitude to the President and the Maldivian government for their cooperation in establishing the US embassy in the Maldives. Both President Solih and Ambassador Yon expressed their hopes for strengthening bilateral ties across all areas of mutual interest.
The Maldives and the United States established diplomatic relations in 1965.
