Jumhooree Party (JP) presidential candidate Qasim Ibrahim has pledged to waive the rent of social housing.

Qasim posted on X Thursday that he does not believe it is fair to take large amounts of money for a long period of time from social housing issued by the government.

"Therefore, under my government, I will waive the rent from flats provided by all previous governments," the business tycoon said.

The JP manifesto also focuses on the housing crisis with a promise to set up 30,000 housing units during the five-year term. These include 15,000 housing units in the Male' region and 15,000 housing units in the atolls.

Some 18,000 housing units will be reserved for young people who are newly married or people who have never been able to get a flat through social housing schemes.

Applications for social housing will be evaluated and points will be given with the help of artificial intelligence, according to the JP manifesto.
