Urbanco on Wednesday announced the lease of lots from Hulhumale' under the second phase of a community urban farming project.
The project aims to increase farming in Hulhumale' through the lease of plots to members of the community.
Urbanco said the company hopes to strengthen community ties and ensure the easy production and availability of foodstuff in Hulhumale'.
Twelve lots measuring 673.28 square feet each have been offered under the project. The lots are to be leased for five years.
Maldivian citizens above 18 years of age who reside in Hulhumale' are eligible to apply. The applicant must not have been leased another urban farming unit in the past.
The project will be carried out under three categories with one lot for a group of three people.
The first category was devised to empower women with 50 percent of units reserved for women.
The second category has 25 percent of units reserved for youth and persons with disabilities.
The third category with 25 percent of units is open to all applicants.
Urbanco said fertilizers, hydroponic systems and other agricultural equipment will be available to the units.
Individuals and groups interested in community urban farming were invited to submit applications to the Urbanco head office before the deadline of September 28.
