The President's Office has ordered the Transport Ministry to stop the sale of vehicle domains, citing irregularities and rule violations in the process.
The directive was issued on Sunday.
A letter from Chief of Staff Ali Zahir to Transport Minister Aishath Nahula instructed the ministry to stop all transactions related to domains until further notice.
The problems noted by the President's Office include the sale of domains without public announcements and the failure to set up a committee to resolve disputes as required by the domain regulations.
"This office has observed that your ministry has not set up the committee stated in the regulations and has been selling domains in violation of the above-mentioned provision of the said regulations," the letter stated.
The President's Office asked the ministry to provide details of domains sold during the current term and to explain the reason for failing to adhere to the regulations.
The order to stop domain sales follows rumors about wrongdoing in the issuance process.
