China National Electric Engineering Company (CNEEC) has been contracted to build tertiary hospitals in Haa Dhaal Kulhudhuffushi and Gaaf Dhaal Thinadhoo.
The Health Ministry said the USD 76 million (MVR 1.17 billion) project was awarded to CNECC on Tuesday with a completion date of 30 months. The project is being carried out with a loan from the Kuwait Fund.
Thinadhoo, which is the main hub of the Huvadhu atoll and Kulhudhuffushi, which is the main hub of the Northern atolls, will get a 100-bed tertiary hospital with this project.
The new tertiary hospitals will be built separately from the existing hospitals in both islands.
The development of tertiary hospitals in five regions of the country is a pledge made by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
In addition to Kulhudhuffushi and Thinadhoo, tertiary hospitals are to be built in Raa Ungoofaaru, Laamu Gan and Addu city Hithadhoo.
Meanwhile, 30-bed hospitals are being built in Haa Dhaal Hanimaadhoo, Shaviyani Milandhoo, Noonu, Velidhoo, Kaafu Thulusdhoo, Alif Dhaal Maaamigili, Vaavu Felidhoo and Thaa Vilufushi with the assistance from Kuwait Fund.
