President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Tuesday night denied allegations that two MPs were bribed to leave the Democrats and join his Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
The allegation came after Thoddoo MP Hassan Shiyan and Kulhudhuffushi North MP Yasir Abdul Latheef resigned from the Democrats.
Former President and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed filed the complaint but the police rejected the matter.
A police spokesman said the letter sent by the parliament did not provide the basic information needed to launch a criminal investigation.
"And if there is such information, the Maldives Police Service believes that such cases should be referred to the ACC as the Anti-Corruption Commission has the main jurisdiction to investigate bribery cases," he said.
Responding to questions from reporters after completing his visit to Thaa and Laamu atolls, President Solih said no MPs had been bribed to switch parties.
"I certainly have not done any kind of money transaction or bribed any MPs..," Solih, who is running for re-election assured.
He said both MPs rejoined the MDP because they believed that development in the constituency could be brought through the MDP.
Solih reiterated his invitation to Democrats to rejoin the MDP and said that all those who left the MDP have the opportunity to rejoin the party and continue in their previous positions.
"I would like to extend this invitation to all those who have moved away from us. There will always be a place for you in the MDP. They will be able to stay where they were before," he said.
MPs who led Nasheed's breakaway faction of the MDP after his loss in the party's presidential primary formed the Democrats.
