The Male' Waste Transfer Station, which was set up in the Industrial Zone, was inaugurated on Monday night.
The government decided in June 2021 to set up a waste transfer station as a temporary storage facility, before the waste is transported from the city to Thilafushi industrial island. The practical work started in 2022 and was completed in 14 months.
The project was supported by the Technical Assistance Special Fund, the Japan Fund for Prosperous and Resilient Asia and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The waste transfer station, which cost about USD 12 million (MVR 183 million), was built by the China State Construction and Engineering Corporation (CSCEC).
Three floors of the seven-storey building are dedicated to waste transfer operations. In addition, space has been given to the administrative work of WAMCO, the Waste Department of the Ministry of Environment and the Environmental Protection Agency.
The waste generated in the city area will be collected at the station and transported to Thilafushi in containers. This will mark the end of carrying waste in barges. Waste will be placed in the containers after separation.
The project will revolutionize the waste management of the city. Waste management centers will also be built for Kaafu, Alif Alif, Alif Dhaal and Vaavu atolls.
