Aishath Aniya, a former journalist and prominent voice during the pro-democracy reform movement, passed away on Sunday.
Aniya died in Bangalore, India while undergoing treatment for cancer.
Aniya was involved in operating the Minivan newspaper during the last years of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's rule. She later ran Minivan Radio.
Aniya was also a popular social media personality who expressed her views and engaged in debates on Twitter and Clubhouse.
Aniya also performed a senior role in the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the first political party formed in the country, serving as deputy secretary general.
She left the MDP in May 2022 after the internal election for a new chairperson.
