Students who have studied under the Villa Foundation's scholarship and loan scheme will be handed over their waiver letters this month.
Qasim Ibrahim, Villa Group founder and one of the wealthiest men in the country, wrote off all student loans issued through his Villa Foundation. He is currently running for President for a third time.
Villa Foundation stated that confirmation letters will be handed over to students on August 27 and 28.
The foundation has requested students to share their information for the administrative work of loan relief.
Students can share their information with the foundation through an application form before August 20.
Speaking at a rally held on August 9 to launch the Jumhooree Party (JP) manifesto, Qasim said he has funded the studies of about 8000 students, including through grants, scholarships and loans.
Most students sponsored by Qasim or the Villa Foundation, including those who have completed first degrees, masters degrees and PhDs, were required to repay a portion of the loan over a long period, he said. The total amount spent is estimated to be nearly MVR 1 billion, Qasim said.
