Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has guaranteed that jailed opposition leader Abdulla Yameen will be released within a week if the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) signs a coalition agreement with The Democrats.
Former President Nasheed is currently campaigning for The Democrats presidential candidate llyas Labeeb. Speaking in Gaafu Dhaalu Gadhdhoo on Thursday night, Nasheed criticized the leadership of the largest opposition party.
“We assure the PPM members that within a week of you agreeing to work with us, hopefully within a week, I will bring President Yameen home, even if I have to stay on the streets of Male' all day long. Yameen will be freed," Nasheed said.
“President Yameen has been in jail for five years because many of those in the PPM leadership today wanted it to be that way,” he accused the opposition leaders of conspiring to keep the former President in prison.
Yameen was sentenced to 11 years in prison after being found guilty of bribery in the leasing of Vaavu Aarah in the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) corruption scandal during his government.
