The ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has lost the majority of Baa Thulhaadhoo council after two councilors joined The Democrats.

Ismail Dawood and Ahmed Adil, who were elected on the MDP ticket, signed up for the Democrats at a meeting held in Thulhaadhoo on Tuesday.

Former president and parliament speaker Mohamed Nasheed, who leads the Democrats, also attended the meeting.

Thulhaadhoo has always had a large MDP majority and the party had always been confident in winning the constituency during parliamentary elections.

The current MP for Thulhaadhoo Hisaan Hussain was a Nasheed ally, but later switched sides and backed President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Nasheed defeated Solih in the Thulhaadhoo constituency during the MDP primaries earlier this year.

Hisaan's visit to the island during the primary campaign sparked protests from people who support Nasheed.
