The Islamic Ministry has stated that MVR 3500 per person was distributed as Zakat among 7657 people.
Zakat is provided to those registered as orphans and poor. The ministry said the money was deposited into registered accounts on Tuesday.
The ministry collected MVR 26.7 million as the annual Zakat from the income and property of the people.
The rate of Zakat is determined based on the market prices of gold and silver. The prices are calculated by the Maldives Monetary Authority.
Zakat is an Islamic financial term. The Zakat zakat rate for this year is MVR 7312.55.
As one of the pillars of the faith, it requires all Muslims to donate a portion of their wealth to charity.
