A training program for speedboat captains jointly organized by Alia Investment and the Maldives Institute of Technology (MIT) has commenced.
The program with 50 participants was held annually since 2014. This year's program is the first since an interruption due to covid. The "Boat Operator's Training" is taking place from July 4 to 6.
Divided into sessions, the main purpose of the training program is to raise awareness among captains and to provide information about the safety of vessels.
Alaau Ali, Alia's managing director, said at the opening ceremony that safety and protection of lagoons and seas were the two most important matters at sea.
"Safety and environmental protection are among the two most important matters. My hope is that you will learn safety at sea along with all the skills needed to travel by the end of this program," he said.
The program includes special sessions on the theory and skills needed to confidently operate speedboats with outboard engines.
Sessions on special speedboat manoeuvres, navigation, chart reading, safety protocols, emergency responses, first aid, fire safety and outboard engine maintenance and troubleshooting are also part of the program.
Resorts, companies that operate sea vessels and some government agencies are participating in the three-day program.
