The Democrats have filed a lawsuit against the Election Commission (EC) for allegedly withholding permission to form the party.

The Democrats and other opposition parties on Sunday told reporters that they have lost confidence in the electoral body.

The Democrats' founder Hassan Latheef said membership forms of 3000 supporters were submitted to the EC on June 1 and the verification of the forms was done within two weeks.

But the commission delayed issuing permission for the party's registration, he alleged.

Hassan said the three months given by the law to the EC to issue permits is a period to verify the forms and there is no legal basis to withhold permission when the verification process is completed.

The case has now been filed in the Civil Court, he said.

The EC on Sunday authorized the formation of The Democrats and informed the party of the decision.

EC member Ismail Habeeb said that the commission has permitted the inaugural congress for the formation of The Democrats to take place next Sunday, which is the first official working day after the Eid holidays.
