The Elections Commission (EC) has finished processing the membership forms submitted by The Democrats.

The Democrats is a new party formed by supporters of the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party's (MDP) president Mohamed Nasheed.

When the registration of The Democrats was put to a vote during an emergency meeting of the EC two members voted in favour and two voted against.

EC president Fuwad Thowfeek told Adhadhu today that the forms have been processed and entered into the system.

He said commission members have been informed of a meeting scheduled for this morning to decide on The Democrats registration.

According to the EC regulation, all matters must be passed at a meeting with majority votes. The quorum is three out of five members.

The two members who earlier voted against The Democrats registration want to form a five member committee to evaluate the forms.

They allege the commission's president Fuwad is biased and claims to have lost confidence in him.

The Democrats wants to field a presidential candidate for the September election. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih will contest on the ticket of MDP.

Despite remaining in the governing coalition, the Jumhooree Party decided to contest separately and awarded its ticket to the party's leader Qasim Ibrahim.

Former attorney general Dr. Mohamed Munavvar, former defence minister Colonel Mohamed Nazim and former home minister Umar Naseer are also contesting in the election.
