A man who was on trial for allegedly sending fake telegraphic transfers (TT) to buy goods from foreign companies has fled the country.
Hussain Shifau left the country while facing nine counts of knowingly issuing an invalid document, seven counts of fraud and seven counts of money laundering.
The Criminal Court freed him on May 25 after saying he did not appear to pose a threat to society. Within two days, the Prosecutor General (PG) appealed the order in the High Court.
The High Court asked the prosecutor's office to clarify his address. Shifau left Maldives on May 29, the office informed the High Court on Monday.
The High Court ruled that the case should be resubmitted to the court after clarifying his address.
Shifau, 37, was smuggling fruits and vegetables into the country by using fake TT.
The total amount involved in the case is MVR 1.9 million (USD 123،844). The prosecutor's office filed a petition in the court seeking recovery of the money.
Shifau faces at least 38 years in prison if convicted.
