Crude oil was thrown at The Democrats campaign hall in Male’ on Monday night while supporters were gathered for an important meeting.
The Democrats is a new party being formed by supporters of former president Mohamed Nasheed - the president of ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Their campaign hall is located in front of the artificial beach in Male’ at the premises where the former MDP hall also operated.
Citing eyewitnesses, the Adhadhu reporter at the scene said four men on two motorcycles splashed crude oil at the campaign hall and the people gathered there.
Police arrived at the scene, but they have not yet officially commented.
MDP’s former vice president Mohamed Shifaz, a leading figure in The Democrats, said their supporters will not back down because of “cowardly acts.”
Nasheed’s supporters in MDP have left the party to form The Democrats. They submitted over 3000 membership forms needed for registration on June 1.
The elections commission (EC) is currently conducting the verification process before officially registering the party.
