Hithadhoo Uthruru MP Mohamed Aslam has said he will “wholeheartedly accept” if the parliamentary group of the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) decides to nominate him as parliament speaker.
At a press conference to announce MDP’s impeachment motion for speaker and former president Mohamed Nasheed, Aslam said it is too soon to discuss whether he would become the new speaker.
However, he indicated that he is ready for the position. During the early days of the 19th parliament, there were reports that the MDP wanted to have Aslam as speaker. But he became the PG leader.
“The parliamentary group will decide. If the parliamentary group reaches such a conclusion and decides to nominate me as speaker, I will accept wholeheartedly,” he said when a reporter questioned him about the position.
This is the fourth time Aslam is serving as a member of parliament. He is among the most senior members in the MDP PG and nominated Nasheed as the speaker for the 19th parliament.
Aslam was a close associate of Nasheed, but amid deepening political rivalry between Nasheed and president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, he has chosen the side of the latter.
