World Environment Day events were held in Alif Alif Ukulhas island on Monday. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and a government delegation visited the island for the official ceremony.
At the function held Monday evening, Solih highlighted the administration's objective to transition the Maldives into a nation that prioritises environmentally friendly energy generation.
This will be achieved by shifting towards renewable energy sources and reducing the country's reliance on fossil fuels, he said.

During his visit, Solih visited the "Beat Plastic Pollution" festival. The festival showcased information about waste recycling, garbage disposal, and waste segregation. It also featured exhibits made of recycled plastic.
He also met with the members of the island council and the Women's Development Committee (WDC) of Ukulhas Island.
The President and the council members discussed the island's socio-economic development and the concerns of the island's residents.

Speaking in the island, Solih said it is the state’s responsibility to protect the rich environment and its beauty for future generations.
“We might not be able to do much to combat climate change, but adapting to climate change impacts and increasing preparedness is something that must be done together,” he said.
He highlighted waste management as the biggest environmental challenge in the Maldives with more waste being generated as the country’s living standards improve.

He advised individuals of all age groups, from the young to the elderly, to reject the use of plastic and embrace sustainable alternatives.
A tree plantation program was also carried out in Ukulhas, jointly organized by the ministry and the island council.

The ministry also organized a Thilafushi RWMF tour for USAID SWM Training participants from over 60 island councils.
They witnessed innovative waste management efforts, including upcoming initiatives for regional facilities nationwide, the ministry said.

In his concluding statement at the Environment Day ceremony, Solih appealed to the public to take a proactive stance by ceasing the use of environmentally harmful plastic products.
