The Maldives' first material recovery facility (MRP) was opened on Monday to gather plastic waste and recycle in Hulhumale’ phase two.
The facility was opened jointly by Maldives Ocean Plastics Alliance (MOPA) and Coca Cola foundation.
MOPA said this is the start of an important project with the involvement of island councils, NGOs, resorts and other collaborators.
It is an important system for waste management by processing recyclable items like plastics, MOPA stated, adding that it would help address plastic pollution.
Urbanco managing director Ahmed Athif said at the inauguration ceremony that the project would set new standards in waste management in the Maldives.
“We are greatly pleased to be part of this project that would set new standards for waste management. This facility will reduce plastic pollution,” said Athif.
Coca Cola foundation provided USD 150,000 to MOPA to build the facility which was opened on World Environment Day.
