Urbanco has built a prison in Kaafu Himmafushi island to transfer the inmates at the Male’ prison.
The government plans to shut down the Male’ prison in order to begin using the new Dharumavantha school building located right next to the prison.
Urbanco said the prison was built at the request of the President’s Office. The prison was built after renovating a rundown, old building.
The new prison has four blocks that can house around 16 inmates each and has 12 toilets for inmates’ use.
Urbanco said structural changes were brought to the building along with refurbishing works and electrical works.
Urbanco is a company dedicated to the development of Hulhumale’. The prison was built under their “Beyond Hulhumale” plan.
According to reports, the government wants to close the Male’ prison and begin using the new building for Dharumvantha School in August for the start of the academic year.
