Planning minister Mohamed Aslam on Tuesday said the bridge project to link Male’ and Thilafushi is behind schedule.
India’s Afcons Infrastructure company is carrying out the Thila-Male’ project which is a key pledge under president Ibrahim Mohamed Soih.
Public concerns have been raised over delays in the project. This is the last year of the first term of Solih’s administration.

But the government has repeatedly defended the project and expressed confidence that it will conclude by the deadline.
At Tuesday’s parliament sessions, Maafannu Medhu MP Ibrahim Rasheed ‘Bondey’ questioned the planning minister over concerns related to project delays.

Aslam acknowledged that the project was behind schedule but there were no plans to give time extensions to the contractors.
“We haven't given extra time extensions to the contractor and we can confirm that there are delays. Work has not progressed as it should have been according to the timeframe in the schedule,” he said.
But he reiterated that the project has not halted and that work was ongoing.
