A man taken to court for a remand hearing in connection to drugs found in a postal package has claimed he went to collect the package for a friend.
The 28 year old man was arrested on Sunday when he went to collect the package. The court decided to remand him for 10 days.
According to the warrant, there were two sheets containing drugs in the package. But the total weight was not mentioned.
The man is accused of smuggling drugs, trafficking and consumption of drugs. The warrant stated that he tested positive for drugs.
Speaking in court, the suspect claimed that he went to collect the package for a friend and did not know it contained drugs.
The law states that carrying over 14 grams of cannabis or four grams of diamorphine will be treated as carrying drugs for trafficking purposes.
The punishment for the crime is 25 years in prison and a fine between MVR 100,000 (USD 6514) to MVR 10 million (USD 651,493).
