Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the stabbing attack on Mathiveri MP Hassan Zareer.
Police told the media that two Maldivian men aged 21 and 22 were detained on May 11 with a court warrant.
They were summoned to the Criminal Court and remanded in custody for 15 days. Police are carrying out further investigations.
Zareer was attacked on May 1 at the Habibi Cafe in front of TVM. Maafannu South MP Adam Ali was with him at the time of the attack.
According to reports, the suspects were captured on the security cameras in the area while leaving the cafe after the attack.
Zareer did not sustain serious injuries and the motive for the attack is unclear.
The speaker of the People’s Majlis and former President Mohamed Nasheed sustained life-threatening injuries when a device exploded near his home in 2021. The authorities believe the attack was carried out by religious extremists.
Ungoofaaru MP Dr. Afraasheem Ali was brutally murdered in the stairwell of his home in 2012. A presidential commission concluded that he was murdered by a local extremist group with ties to al-Qaeda.
