His remains were recovered from the second chamber by two colleagues who risked their lives. This discovery was crucial in locating the other missing members of the diving group.

The body of Italian dive instructor Gianluca Benedetti has been repatriated following a tragic diving accident in Vaavu Atoll. He was the first of five Italian victims recovered from an underwater cave. Two more bodies have since been retrieved, while a local soldier also died during the rescue operation.
