The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has called for the resignation of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairperson, Ahmed Shamil.
The MDP Deputy Campaign Manager for the council elections, Ali Niyaz, said that President Mohamed Muizzu was changing the constitution to end democracy.
"The state is organised in a certain order. When the constitution was drafted in 2008, we designed the constitution to separate the three powers and allow independent institutions to function independently. This was in place for the last 18 years," he said.
The MDP members who gathered near the ACC demanded Shamil's resignation and also called to stop influencing the council elections.
"However, suddenly Muizzu is saying it's very difficult for me because there is democracy in the Maldives. Its very difficult because there is this article in the constitution. It was not formulated for the convenience of the President," Niyaz added.
On January 12, the ACC asked the public to report if any candidates offered bribes to buy their vote and support.
The ACC said it would not leave any case unchecked.
However, several cases have been reported to the ACC, but the commission did not say whether any decisions were taken and did not express concern over any complaints.
