US President Donald Trump's envoy Sergio Gor departed from the Maldives on Monday (March 23) after cancelling his appointment with President Mohamed Muizzu.

Before his departure, Gor met Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel and Defense Minister Ghassan Maumoon. He also made an appointment to meet Muizzu, but left the country after canceling the meeting.

At a press conference on Monday morning, Muizzu criticized the United States and encouraged Iran to attack US military bases.

"The two initiators of this war, the US and Israel, their places [military bases] must be attacked in a way that does not harm the Muslims in the region. That is the policy of the Maldivian government," he said.

Gor, who also serves as an adviser to Trump, is the US Special Envoy to South and Central Asia and the Ambassador to India. He is one of the most influential officials in the US government.

Muizzu said Gor had requested to meet him, but said that the Maldives has nothing to discuss with the US about the ongoing war.

"I want to see what he wants to talk about. If he talks about this war, I have nothing to say. No territory in the country will be available to use for this war or any other war. It won't happen," Muizzu said.

Meanwhile, a Maldivian man had also called for Gor's killing in a post on Facebook.

A Facebook account named Hussain Ahsan posted that "everyone should come out and stone him to death."

The threat was posted on the day the US government announced Gor's scheduled visit to the Maldives and Sri Lanka.

Police did not comment on whether they were investigating the threat.
