The government has failed to meet the Giraavaru lagoon reclamation deadline announced by President Mohamed Muizzu.

In a social media post on November 25, 2025, Muizzu said that the lagoon will be completely reclaimed within the next two or three months.

The deadline given ends tomorrow (February 25). However, satellite images taken last Thursday (February 19) showed that no work has been done in the deepest area of the lagoon.

In addition, the government also said that the land use plan would be amended and the registry would be handed over after the lottery.

The draw for the land owners in Giraavaru lagoon was held on January 31. However, the land registry has not yet been handed over.

Along with the Giraavaru lagoon, the government also began reclamation in Hulhumale' Phase 3. The project has now been completed.

The government resumed reclamation projects as part of the campaign for the upcoming local council elections scheduled for April 4.
