Prices of commodities in the local market have increased on the first day of Ramadan compared to the prices at the beginning of the week.
An orange is for MVR 10 while a kilo of passionfruit is for MVR 140. However, last week an orange was sold at MVR 8 while a passionfruit kilo was sold for MVR 80.
A kilo of bananas was for MVR 30 at the start of the week, but now a kilo is sold for between MVR 50 and MVR 70.
Coconuts are for between MVR 35 and MVR 50 while a 1.5 litre bottle of coconut water is for between MVR 120 and MVR 150.
A kilo of watermelon is for MVR 20 and MVR 25. At the start of the week, the price was MVR 15 and MVR 20.

Some vendors said that the prices are rising due to difficulties in getting goods. They said the price is expected to fall in the coming days.
"The prices of goods will usually be higher at the beginning," one vendor at the market said.
