Some businessmen have criticised President Mohamed Muizzu's decision to set up advisory committees for three economic areas.
The Economic Ministry has already formed a business council. The council has 30 members representing various industries.
Some businessmen on the business council, who wanted to remain anonymous, said the council meetings are held once or twice a month, chaired by Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed. They do not believe that there is any need to form new committees.
Another reason why businessmen do not believe there is a need to form a new committee is that the government does not follow the advice of the existing council.
"Why are you seeking our advice? The President does not accept our advice," said an experienced tourism businessman.
The issues raised in the business council include forced exchange of dollars, excessive duty on cigarettes, rising prices of goods and non-payment of dues by the government.
"None of this has been resolved. Minister Saeed has always said that he will take the matter to the President. But no results have been seen," another businessman said.
Muizzu is forming advisory committees in the fields of tourism, construction, fisheries and mariculture.
The deadline for applications for membership in the committees is February 16.
