Five mayors confirm MDP mayoral tickets

Five incumbent mayors have confirmed the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) mayoral tickets for the upcoming local council elections.

They are Male' Mayor Adam Azim, Addu Mayor Ali Nizar, Fuvahmulah Mayor Ismail Rafeeq, Kulhudhuffushi Mayor Mohamed Athif and Thinadhoo Mayor Saud Ali.

MDP Primary Results

  • Adam Azim won the mayoral primary against Ali Azim with 1,411 votes. Ali Azim got 962 votes.
  • Saud won the mayoral primary with 462 votes. His opponent Ahmed Naseer got 417 votes.
  • Nizar confirmed the ticket as he is the sole candidate for the mayoral seat.
  • Rafeeq confirmed the ticket as he is the sole candidate for the mayoral seat.
  • Athif confirmed the ticket as he is the sole candidate for the mayoral seat.

Both the MDP and the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) have held primaries to select candidate for the elections.

The Elections Commission (EC) today (January 17) opened the opportunity to nominate candidates for the April 4 polls to elect members to city councils, island councils and Women's Development Committees (WDC).

Candidate applications can be filed until 3:30 pm on February 1.
