Adam Azim secures MDP mayoral ticket

Incumbent Mayor of Male' Adam Azim has won the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s mayoral ticket for the April 4 local council elections.

Adam Azim got 1411 votes or 57.9 percent of the votes in the primary held on Friday (January 16). His rival former MP Ali Azim got 962 votes or 39.5 percent of the vote.

A total of 2,436 people voted, but 63 votes were invalid.

Adam Azim became Male' Mayor two years ago following former Mayor Mohamed Muizzu's successful presidential campaign.

Around 54,680 people were eligible to vote to elect the Male' Mayor, but only 31 percent voted. Adam Azim won the 44.8 percent of the votes.

Ruling People's National Congress (PNC) candidate Azima Shukoor was his closest rival in the January 13, 2024 election.

Before becoming Mayor, Azim was the Managing Director of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) in the Solih administration.
