Former Chairperson of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Fayyaz Ismail has endorsed Hanimaadhoo MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa for the post of interim Chairperson.
Ghafoor's name was proposed by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's faction within the main opposition party.
He is the only candidate at the moment. Fayyaz has called on the party to fast-track the election of the interim Chairperson.
"Now we have MP Ghafoor's name only. I support MP Ghafoor," Fayyaz wrote in a message to the official WhatsApp group of MDP National Council.
Ghafoor is currently the most senior MP in the MDP parliamentary group. The post for Chairperson became vacant following Fayyaz's resignation in late November.
The last session of the National Council was adjourned after heated debates. The chair announced that Abdullah Waheed had been elected.
But he later retracted the statement, creating confusion and argument between members. Waheed has since withdrawn his candidacy for the post.
