A man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for making death threats to former President Mohamed Nasheed on social media.
The Criminal Court on Wednesday sentenced Ismail Yafis for using multiple social media platforms in 2021 to threaten Nasheed.
In addition to social media, Yafis has also threatened to attack Nasheed during the police investigation and trial.
He was charged with supporting a terrorist group, threatening to commit a terrorist attack and encouraging an act of terrorism.
He was sentenced to two years in prison for supporting a terrorist group, while a sentence of three years was announced for threatening to commit an act of terrorism. He was sentenced to an additional five years for encouraging an act of terrorism.
On May 6, 2021, a bomb exploded near the main road in Male' to assassinate Nasheed. He was seriously injured in the attack.
