President Mohamed Muizzu has called on the entertainment industry not to do anything that goes beyond the boundaries of Islam.
In a post on social media X, Muizzu said that people involved in the film industry and entertainment industry should not act in a way that contradicts Islamic values.
“The most valuable service we can do for this country is to set a good example for the rising generation in accordance with Islamic culture,” he said.
Muizzu said the Maldives is a 100 percent Muslim country and the people should keep their actions within the boundaries of Islam.
His remarks come amid criticism of the clothes worn by a man who attended a film premiere on Thursday night.
Organizers said they do not encourage attendees to wear clothes that violate social norms. The theme for the night was "Maldivian Royal with a Modern Touch."
