The Maldives Bureau of Statistics released the Maldives Population Projection 2022-2062 on Tuesday. It predicts that one in four people will be over 65 years of age by 2052.

"Between 2045 and 2051, Maldives becomes an aged population. The year 2052 marks Maldives entry into the ranks of super-aged societies- with 1 in every 4 Maldivians aged 65 years or above," the report stated.

The aging population is predicted to increase from 2062 onwards by at least 120,000 people over the age of 65.

"In 2022, the elderly population consisted of around 20,000 people. By 2062, this figure is projected to increase sixfold, reaching 120,000 elders," it added.

The report recommended preparing for a super-aged society by focusing on healthcare, pension and eldercare systems.
