A resolution has been submitted to the parliament over the issue of denying Aasandha health insurance to foreigners married to Maldivians.

The resolution was moved by Galolhu North MP Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudu) from the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

It stated that foreigners married to Maldivians are denied access to Aasandha and other similar services because of the half a century old Citizenship Act.

Article 17 of the constitution

a- Everyone is entitled to the rights and freedoms included in this Chapter without discrimination of any kind, including race, national origin, colour, sex, age, mental or physical disability, political or other opinion, property, birth or other status, or native island. b - Special assistance or protection to disadvantaged individuals or groups, or to groups requiring special social assistance, as provided in law shall not be deemed to be discrimination, as provided for in article

It added that foreigners who had been married to Maldivians for many years have to face expenses when it comes to medical issues.

The resolution stressed the need to ensure access to insurance for foreigners married to Maldivians as some of them have children and have lived and worked in the Maldives for decades.

It called on the state to give them equal protection, noting that Article 17 of the constitution establishes the principle of non-discrimination.
