On Thursday, the Baa atoll council approved to invited other atoll councils to join a protest in the streets of Male'.

The council also approved to issue a statement calling on the government-controlled People's Majlis to abandon the efforts to abolish atoll councils.

A further decision was made to file a constitutional case at the Supreme Court.

Muizzu believes atoll councils "are useless" and has been bringing changes to the decentralization system in the Maldives.

He recently said there will not be a vote to elect atoll councilors in the local council elections scheduled for early next year.

The abolishment of atoll councils would bring an abrupt change to the administrative structure of the state. The atolls councils have historically played an important role in the administrative function of the state.
