Government allows MDP anniversary run after pressure

The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has scheduled its 20th anniversary run on August 1 Hulhumale'.

The MDP said the run will be held in the Central Park area with the assistance of police. Further details will be announced in the coming days.

The run was first scheduled to be held on July 18. But the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) refused to give permission.

The main opposition party then decided to hold the run in Male' on July 25.

In a letter to the Elections Commission (EC) the MDP condemned the government's refusal to allow the peaceful political event.

The Ran Reendhoo (Golden Yellow) run was announced in all the islands to mark the party's 20th anniversary. It will end in May 2026.
