Noonu Maafaru International Airport has been officially opened today.
The airport development project was carried out by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).
The apron has been expanded to accommodate 30 jets at a time.
The airport is operated by Island Aviation, which is in charge of the national airline, Maldivian. The airport was developed with funding from the UAE's Abu Dhabi Fund.
Maafaru Airport is famous for landing tourist jets to luxury resorts in Noonu Atoll and other nearby atolls. In 2023 alone, 353 jets landed at the airport.
Maldivian's Managing Director Ibrahim Iyas said they were working to expand the terminal and arrival hall and set up lounges as well as a city hotel for passengers and crew.
According to statistics, more than 3,000 international flights have been operated to Maafaru Airport from 2019 till June this year.
