An agreement has been signed with the state-run utility company Fenaka Corporation to install air conditioning in classrooms across all schools in the Maldives.
The agreement was signed yesterday at a ceremony by Education Minister Dr. Ismail Shafeeu on behalf of the government, while Fenaka’s Managing Director, Mohamed Najah, signed on behalf of the company.
Under the project, a total of 3,704 classrooms nationwide will be equipped with air conditioning. Fenaka has been allocated MVR 55 million to supply and install the units.
After the signing, Minister Shafeeu stated that both students and parents are eager for the "Cool School Project" to be completed promptly. The initiative, which began last year, aims to improve classroom conditions for students.
"The government has established the initial framework to advance the initiative within two years. However, our current projection is to proceed with the distribution and installation of air conditioners to schools by the end of September this year," he stated.
He also revealed for the first time that the project includes plans to install air conditioning in school halls after classrooms have been completed.
According to the government, as of last month, a total of 802 air conditioners have been installed in 401 classrooms.
Additionally, solar panels are planned for installation in all schools to support the transition to renewable energy. However, it remains unclear whether Fenaka will be handling the solar panel installations.
