President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced a decision to amend the constitution to introduce a recall vote for all elective posts except the President.
At a press conference at the President's Office, Muizzu said a recall vote can disqualify elected officials in each constituency.
“Introduce a mechanism to remove all elected officials, including councilors and MPs, if a recall vote ends in favour of dismissing them," he stated.
He said this change will give the people the opportunity to remove elected officials under a democratic system.
But he did not say whether a recall vote would be proposed for the post of President, who is elected by the entire voting population of the country.
The government earlier decided to merge the presidential and parliamentary elections, switch the presidential election to a "preferential voting" system, cancel the runoff round of the presidential election and cap the number of MPs at 93. The government also wants to abolish the atoll councils.
