The amount needed for the first round of treatment for a young woman in critical condition after surviving a ninth-floor fall from a building in Male' has been raised with the help of the public.

Police believe Hawwa Yumnu, 21, fell from a window in the stairwell of Henveiru Fentenoy house on April 18. She is scheduled to be evacuated to Malaysia tonight for further treatment.

According to the document provided by Malaysia's Pantai Hospital, Yumnu's initial surgeries alone cost more than USD 57,000 (MVR 878,940). The hospital said she could be admitted when the family pays USD 45,724 (MVR 705,064).

The fundraising began at around 7:00 pm tonight and the target was reached within one and a half hours. Social media users were active on multiple platforms to raise money.

The family had to appeal for public assistance abruptly because the government had gone back on a promise to fully cover the expenses for Yumnu's treatment.

The government told the family on Friday that all expenses would be covered. But with just a few hours left for the evacuation, they informed that full financial assistance cannot be provided.

The government provided MVR 385,500, which is less than half of the amount needed for the first stage of treatment.

The family said it was their mistake to trust the government's word in the first place.

"This is my problem. It is a big problem with me that I believed what the system said again," a family member told Adhadhu.

Raudh Ahmed, 21, who was with Yumnu at the time of the incident, left the scene and did not report to authorities. He was detained six days after the incident.

The police have faced immense criticism over their response following Yumnu's fall. There have been accusations of a cover-up because the case involves relatives of wealthy and politically influential figures.
